Boxing News: Josh Taylor acknowledged that he sustained a “very serious injury” while preparing for the rematch with Jack Catterall, but the world champion of Scotland is adamant that “we’ll fight when I’m ready to fight.”
Taylor was anticipated to announce a rematch with Catterall, but due to a fitness setback, he will now have to postpone his return to the ring after his contentious points victory over the Chorley fighter in February.
On Saturday night, while seeing Chris Eubank Jr. vs. Liam Smith at Manchester’s AO Arena, the acrimonious rivals brawled fiercely at ringside and had to be separated.
“When I’m ready to fight, then we’ll fight. I was hurt, and that was really all there was to it,” After Chris Eubank Jr. was defeated by Liam Smith, Taylor spoke to Sky Sports.
“Injury occurred there on Monday throughout the week, but I tried to push through it to see if I could continue exercising, but I couldn’t.
“I visited the physician, and he said it’s a really serious injury, so I can’t push the healing process. I can only wait to see how long it takes to heal.
“It makes me really angry. I was revved up and prepared to battle. In the gym, I was killing it, and everything was great.
“Everything was on schedule until I had a terrible accident, which was simply one of those things beyond my control.
“I can only make an effort to heal as quickly as possible, return to the gym, and resume my training regimen as soon as I can.
“Perhaps soon. At this point, I really can’t give a timeline. I must wait to observe how the recovery progresses and what the specialists and medical professionals advise.
“I’m not going to rush this one since it’s really horrible. We’ll just have to wait and see, but I definitely want to have that fight and go on with my career, so hopefully as soon as feasible.
“I want to resume travelling because my work has been on pause for a while.”
Since then, there has been a lot of discussion about Taylor’s disputed decision triumph over Catterall.
Taylor refused to allow obligatory challengers to take him away from the fight he desired, thus in order to get the rematch, he had to give up three of the four world titles he possessed.
Even though a rematch would prevent Catterall from challenging for undisputed status once more, it would still give him a shot at the world title for the second time in a row. He is still the WBO 140-pound champion. However, it would primarily give Catterall the chance to attempt to make amends with Taylor.
However, the Scotsman’s injury means that the battle that both men want will have to wait even longer.
