Boxing: Teofimo Lopez indicates the reaction he expects to elicit with a statement performance against Pedro Campa in Las Vegas this Saturday by dropping his jaw and briefly widening his eyes.
Following a disappointing loss to George Kambosos Jr. in November that saw the Australian take the WBA (Super), IBF, and WBO championships that he would later forfeit to Devin Haney in June, “The Takeover” is looking to establish himself among the world’s title-hunting super-lightweights.
Prior to that, Lopez had established himself as one of the best at 135 pounds with a decisive second-round knockout of Richard Commey and a unanimous decision victory over Vasyl Lomachenko of Ukraine.
His return to the ring beckons in a way that suggests, “Remember me?”
“It’s already happening and I haven’t even fought yet,” Lopez told Sky Sports. “That’s what The Takeover is all about.
“I think people are sensing my energy, they’re feeling the presence and come Saturday night we’re going to let it be known again against all odds that we’re here to stay forever, I’m not a one-hit wonder.
“At the end of it all I want to see everybody’s mouth like this *drops his jaw*, it’s just going to open because it’s going to be that entertaining, that exciting.
“You guys have yet to see the best version of Teofimo. If you guys thought Lomachenko was my best version, that was nothing, that was probably 50 per cent of what I’m capable of doing.”
Lopez (16-1, 12 KOs) said he anticipates a “battle” with Mexican opponent Campa, who comes into the contest with a professional record of 34-1-1 (23 KOs).
“This is definitely a treat for everyone, you guys are going to see whether this will be the last of Teofimo Lopez or just the beginning,” he added. “I’m all about performing for everybody.”
Ryan Garcia recently challenged undisputed lightweight champion Haney and Gervonta “Tank” Davis to follow suit in order to face Lopez in the ring. Lopez’s move up to 140 pounds has coincided with Garcia’s move up to that weight.
Elsewhere Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall appear to be headed for a rematch of their fight from February, which resulted in a contentious points decision for the former.
Lopez has welcomed a fight night in the UK and is willing to fight the victor.
“Me and Jack Catterall had some back and forth talks, sadly that was somebody I definitely wanted to fight, I felt like we could have made the fight happen, however my matchmakers had some other options for me,” he said.
