Shields vs Marshall: Dmitriy Salita, Claressa Shields’ promoter, thinks a rematch with Savannah Marshall in the US “naturally makes sense.” Marshall became an undisputed super-middleweight champion on Saturday night with a majority decision win over Franchon Crews-Dezurn, with Shields sitting at ringside.
A rematch between Savannah Marshall and Claressa Shields in the United States would “make sense,” according to the American’s promoter Dmitriy Salita, who has suggested Natasha Jonas as a possible replacement opponent.
Shields has determined that any rematch with Marshall must take place in the United States after winning a grudge contest between the two in October by unanimous decision.
However, after defeating Franchon Crews-Dezurn to become the undisputed super-middleweight champion on Saturday night, Marshall cited Newcastle’s St James’ Park as a suitable location for the bout, provoking heated exchanges in the post-fight news conference in Manchester.
“Claressa was in the United Kingdom to support her friend Franchon. During the ring announcement, I realised that each fighter’s only loss is to Claressa,” Salita told Sky Sports.
“Certainly, a fight with Marshall is something we would consider. Claressa travelled to the United Kingdom for the first bout, therefore it stands to reason that the second battle will take place in the United States, most likely at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.
“There are three relatively short direct flights from Heathrow to Detroit every day, so Savannah can have her fans in the arena.
“Aside from that, there are some good fights in the UK, such as Natasha Jonas. And we like the UK boxing fans and media – the enthusiasm for the sport is absolutely remarkable.”
Shields returned to the ring last month, successfully defending her undisputed middleweight championship against Maricela Cornejo by unanimous decision.
The two-time Olympic champion was connected to a bout with Jonas earlier this year, but the two sides were unable to reach an agreement, and the Liverpudlian instead moved down in weight to contend for and win the vacant IBF welterweight championship.
