Women’s Boxing: Mikaela Mayer was previously a role model for Caroline Dubois. She is now preparing to fight her.
Dubois is just seven fights into her professional career, but she recently defeated Yanina Lescano, who is ranked highly in the world at lightweight.
America’s Mayer is a former unified super-feather champion who has recently moved up to 135lbs, the same weight class as Dubois.
The Briton wishes to fight Mayer in a high-profile match.
She did, however, recognise Mayer’s contribution to women’s boxing. “I’ve been following her since she got pro. In 2016, I was watching after the Olympics. “I watched almost every one of her fights,” Dubois remarked.
“It’s incredible to see how far she’s come and how much she’s contributed to the advancement of the sport.”
Dubois, on the other hand, made it plain that she now views Mayer as a competitor rather than a role model, stating, “She’s moved up to my division. So she’s suddenly a competitor. She’s not only someone I can look up to; she’s competition.”
Dubois expressed optimism that a fight with Mayer is possible, imagining a highly anticipated contest with the same degree of anticipation as Claressa Shields versus Savannah Marshall. Her objective is the Mayer battle. “100%, That’s exactly what I want,” she stated.
“That’s something I’ve always desired. Mikaela Mayer and I can sell out the 02 Arena again; it’ll be incredible.”
Dubois has been inspired by the success of her other gymmates, including Chris Billam-Smith and Ellie Scotney, who both won world titles in their most recent fights. Their accomplishments inspire Dubois to improve her own game. “Chris has won a world title, and Ellie has won a world title. It’s time for me to step up and start bringing my own flavour to the game,” she remarked.
Dubois is anxious to compete for a world championship this year, but understands that it will be contingent on the outcome of other important fights.
