European Light-Heavyweight Champion: Dan Azeez has revealed that he has signed a contract for a light-heavyweight fight with long-time buddy Joshua Buatsi and is currently in training camp.
Azeez won the European championship in March with a 12th-round stoppage of France’s Thomas Faure in Paris, improving his perfect career record to 19-0 (13).
The Lewisham fighter has subsequently contracted to face fellow undefeated boxer Buatsi in an all-British clash and will compete in a non-title eight-rounder in Italy this weekend as part of his preparations, according to Sky Sports.
“I’m fighting in Italy this Saturday in Milan, God willing, and I’ve signed to fight Joshua Buatsi in a south London brawl,” Azeez explained.
“We’ve done plenty of rounds [of sparring] together, and I’m sure there have been times when the switch has been turned on, so I’m sure it won’t make much of a difference in a real fight.
“We’re both undefeated, it’s an all-South London brawl, and we want to see who’s truly the best.”
Former British light-heavyweight champion Buatsi returned to the ring in March after nearly a year away, defeating Pawel Stepien by unanimous decision over 10 rounds, improving to 17-0 (13) in his career.
Boxxer promoter Ben Shalom stated earlier this month that the duo will clash in a domestic brawl, with Azeez previously connected with a fight against Dmitry Bivol for the WBA world championship.
The 32-year-old has been waiting for word of his next opponent after a prospective rematch with Canelo Alvarez fell through, with Anthony Yarde, another British fighter, potentially a possible opponent.
Boxxer did not get an invitation to face Azeez and Bivol, and the 33-year-old is focusing on Buatsi while remaining open to fighting anyone following their fight.
“This is one of the biggest fights in British boxing,” stated Shalom. “Both guys did well to accept it. It’s a fight that we’re very enthusiastic about, and one that I know the fans will support.
“Two of the most exciting prospects in a hotly contested light-heavyweight division.” They’ve trained and sparred together, and they know each other well, which will make this an intriguing competition.
“We hope to announce more details, including the date and location, very soon.”
