Anti-Doping Violation: After testing positive for a prohibited substance following his fight with Kell Brook last year, Amir Khan was given a two-year suspension from all sports. He has since denied any wrongdoing.
Khan, 36, reportedly tested positive for the anabolic substance ostarine after losing against Brook in Manchester on February 19, 2022, according to UK Anti-Doping.
Khan, who announced his retirement in May of last year, admitted to breaking the anti-doping laws but maintained that he had not deliberately consumed the chemical. An independent panel agreed with Khan’s claim after a hearing in January.
The two-year ban for Mr Khan is judged to have started on April 6 2022 (the date his interim suspension was imposed) and will end on April 5 2024, according to a UKAD statement.
Khan was furious when Sky News questioned him about the decision, responding: “Never have I cheated.
“I used to be a fighter. My performance versus Kell Brook showed that it wasn’t my best. I dropped the battle. It would be different if I had entered the room and struck Kell Brook. I’ve never cheated in my life, and I requested that the testing be conducted.
“Shaking hands with people may have contributed to the amount that was in my system. I am unsure of the substance that was in my system. I’ll share my opinions, but as I’ve previously stated, I’ve never cheated. I’d never commit fraud. It’s interesting that despite being a retired boxer, I now have a two-year ban. I’m already retired, though. No plans at all for a comeback.”
In what turned out to be his final professional fight, Khan’s grudge match with Brook was stopped in the sixth round 14 months ago.
In a written ruling dated February 21, 2022, an independent panel accepted Khan’s defence, disregarded “deliberate or reckless conduct,” and imposed a two-year suspension from all sports owing to “strict culpability” rather than a more severe four-year punishment.
According to UKAD chief executive Jane Rumble, “strict responsibility means that athletes are ultimately liable for what they consume and for the presence of any illegal substances in a sample.”
According to UKAD, ostarine is a selective androgen receptor modulator that promotes muscle growth and is made to have effects akin to those of testosterone.
