Doping Violation: Amir Khan has admitted to Sky Sports News that he has no explanation for the presence of a prohibited substance in his system the night he lost to Kell Brook, and he says he doesn’t want the event to be associated with him in the future.
Following his fight with Brook last February, the former world champion’s failed anti-doping test resulted in a two-year suspension from competitive sports, it was reported on Tuesday.
The charges against him were established in a separate hearing, but the panel disregarded the possibility of deliberate or careless behaviour on Khan’s part and determined that the amount of ostarine in his system was insufficient to improve his performance and would have needed to be a thousand times stronger.
He responded, “I have no idea,” when Sky Sports questioned him about how the material entered his body. “It might involve greeting individuals and shaking their hands. Ostarine levels in my blood were 0.5, which is less than a grain of salt in an Olympic-sized swimming pool.
“I’m not sure how it entered my system; perhaps it happened while shaking hands or while sharing a drink with someone.”
The results show that it couldn’t have affected my performance, and given the amount in my blood, it couldn’t have made me any stronger or better, he continued. Even though it was so small, it managed to enter the body,” he added.
Khan did not want Tuesday’s discoveries to stain his entire career, even though he lost the fight through a sixth-round stoppage and announced his retirement from the sport a few weeks later.
“It would hurt me a lot to be known for something like this,” he continued.
“I think it’ll always annoy me if people only remember me for this one incident because I know it wasn’t done on purpose.
“I hope people believe me and perhaps exercise more caution, especially the young and aspiring fighters can learn from me how mistakes can occur,”
Ostarine was detected in his urine sample at a concentration of half a nanogram per millilitre, where a nanogram is one billionth of a gramme.
Khan claims he is willing to take some responsibility for the results notwithstanding the volumes involved.
“I’m sorry a lot. I must assume some level of accountability,” he said.
“While it has been discovered in my system, I can honestly tell the public and everyone else that I would never do something like that.
“It’s such a tiny sum, and it was never even remotely useful. I’m not sure how it got in there, but I maybe ought to have exercised a little bit more caution. I sincerely apologise.”
