Anfield Fight: Liam Smith claims he is “desperate” to fight at Anfield and is willing to take on Gennady Golovkin, Kell Brook, or Chris Eubank Jr. in a rematch.
Smith improved his reputation on Saturday at a packed AO Arena in Manchester by putting on a sensational performance to defeat Eubank Jr. in the fourth round.
The Liverpudlian acknowledged he is committed to a rematch clause to face Eubank Jr. again, but it is unclear if the defeated boxer will exercise that option in light of the devastating nature of his defeat.
The winner on Saturday was expected to face either middleweight world champion Golovkin or former welterweight world champion Brook, with the latter having expressed interest in coming out of retirement for the potential fight.
After winning, Smith told Sky Sports News, “I think the GGG fight can be made.”
“I’ve also promised that since it was written into [the contract] in advance, I’ll accept the rematch if Chris requests it. The rematch at Anfield would be fantastic.
“Chris Eubank was defeated by me, so it’s not like I lost and now must attempt to start over or retire. I’m back in the mix and will start connecting with everyone soon.
“I’ve observed Kell Brook’s desire to exit retirement. Again, that’s going to be a big fight, so I’m just enjoying my comfortable position.”
Smith is not the only Liverpudlian who wants to compete at Anfield; Natasha Jonas, the undisputed super-welterweight world champion, has also hinted at the idea.
Jonas and Smith would make up the core of an outstanding card to bring boxing back to a Merseyside football stadium for the first time since Tony Bellew’s epic contest at Everton’s Goodison Park in May 2016. They would also be joined by lightweight prospect and Liverpool supporter Adam Azim.
Smith is confident that there will be strong interest in an Anfield fight night due to the dramatic nature of his victory over Eubank Jr.
Without intending to seem conceited, he said, “When you put me there after this, it sells well anyway.”
“People board the train hoping for another night just like it. I believe that the Scouse supporters in particular only want a bill at Anfield once my name reappears there.
“After the performance at Goodison Park, I believe we are yearning for a performance at Anfield.
“It’s a big dream, but it might be real.”
