Liam Smith vs Eubank Jr: Despite a “frustrating” delay, Liam Smith’s rematch with Chris Eubank Jr is anticipated to take place in late August or early September, according to promoter Ben-Shalom.
Following Smith’s spectacular stoppage victory over Eubank Jr in January, the British duo were slated to face off again on July 1 at the AO Arena in Manchester.
However, due to the recurrence of a minor disease, Smith asked a postponement, which Eubank Jr agreed to.
While the delay was initially supposed to be only a few weeks, Shalom acknowledges he is still waiting for Smith to affirm that the Liverpudlian boxer would be ready to fight by the end of August.
“It was a scheduled fight that had to be rescheduled due to Liam Smith’s injury,” Shalom told Sky Sports News on Monday.
“It’s as frustrating for him as it is for us, but we can’t keep Chris Eubank Jr waiting indefinitely.
“Last week, I met Kalle Sauerland (Eubank Jr’s promoter). We anticipate that a date will be set around the end of August or early September.”
Shalom’s comments come amid rumours that Eubank Jr. may instead fight Conor Benn, with whom he was supposed to fight in October last year before Benn returned two positive drug tests for a prohibited substance.
“I know there’s been reports of things going on in the boxing world that we’re not a part of,” Shalom continued. “However, as of last week, our understanding is that the rematch will take place, and it has just been extremely frustrating for both fighters.”
“I think Kalle and I would enjoy a date at the end of August. It interests both of us. He needs to speak with Chris Eubank Jr., and Liam Smith has done everything he can to guarantee he’s ready for that date.
“We’re hoping to announce next week, but as with boxing, we’ll see what happens – it’s been frustrating for both guys because they both want the fight.
“We had hoped to be ready in July, then early August, and now the end of August, but after speaking with Liam and his team, we’ll make sure he’s 100 percent before the date is announced.”
On Saturday, July 1, Franchon Crews-Dezurn and Savannah Marshall will headline the event, while Natasha Jonas will aim to become a two-weight world champion when she meets Kandi Wyatt.
Rising talent Ben Whittaker will also compete at the AO Arena, while Mark Heffron will face Zak Chelli.
