Boxing Match: After filming a heated episode of The Gloves Are Off with Liam Smith, Chris Eubank Jr. claimed he is experiencing “the pressure” for the first time in his career.
Smith knocked the 33-year-old down for the first time in his professional career during a fourth-round stoppage loss in January, but Eubank is out for vengeance when they square off again on June 17 in Manchester.
As the rematch episode of The Gloves Are Off was being filmed, the domestic rivals’ verbal battle resumed, with Eubank all too aware of the repercussions of yet another loss.
“It’s always interesting sitting across the table from a man you’re going to fight in a few months, looking into his eyes, especially when that man has a win over you which he does,” said Eubank Jr. to Sky Sports News.
“I’m up for the battle since this is a rematch and a very important fight for me right now.
“I might not have underestimated him, but the last bout didn’t put as much strain on me. On the other hand, now that the pressure is all on me, I have to go on stage and deliver; my professional future is at stake.
“Since I’ve never faced a foe who has already defeated me, I’m curious to see how that would influence my preparation, frame of mind, and performance on the night.”
Eubank Jr. brushed off speculations that he might retire if he lost a second time. Eubank Jr. was praised for his tenacity in trying to continue after being knocked down in the first fight.
“I get asked this question every time I fight,” he remarked. “It seems like after you turn 30 people start asking you if you’re going to retire if you lose.
“No, I don’t think that way, I don’t project it onto the universe, and I don’t bring up retirement.
“I’m going to give it everything I’ve got to win; if by some miracle he manages to win again, I won’t say, ‘I’m going to retire.
“As a fighter, you fight, and I’ll keep doing that as long as my body can withstand these training camps,” said the boxer.
Eubank acknowledges that Liam Smith has a psychological advantage going into the fight after winning their previous encounter, but he claims that the result has motivated him to work harder than before.
“Many individuals who are unfamiliar with fighting or boxing believe that it simply requires being tough, powerful, and quick,” according to Eubank.
