175lb Division: Joshua Buatsi is committed to winning the light-heavyweight championship.
The 30-year-old British fighter is confident in his ability to compete at the highest level, but he is unsure about the current champions when it comes time for his own championship defence.
With the WBA, the governing body where Buatsi is the top-ranked contender, Dmitry Bivol is the 175-pound champion.
The undisputed champion of the WBC, WBO, and IBF is Artur Beterbiev, one of the most intimidating punchers in the sport.
Buatsi is aware that if he can defeat Pawel Stepien of Poland, he will be in a position to contend for a big championship.
However, a loss in Birmingham on May 6, would put an end to their hopes.
“Are Beterbiev and Bivol going to merge? Will Bivol give up the title and drop down to face Canelo [Alvarez]? If I lose one more bout, will Beterbiev announce my retirement? So difficult to express. It’s very erratic,” Buatsi said to Sky Sports.
“It’s critical that I position myself properly so that, when the chance presents itself, I’m first in the queue.
“I’m currently in that position.”
A confrontation with one of the champions would be welcomed by him.
I haven’t declined a challenger by saying, “Oh, I don’t want to fight this man. My coach suggested that you choose between taking on Bivol in a few fights or going for the crown. He didn’t say that, though, so we wouldn’t say yes,” Buatsi continued.
“Saying that I would be better prepared after a few bouts doesn’t imply that we weren’t ready if we had been given the chance.”
He described Beterbiev and Bivol as killers and added, “I think I’m one too.” That’s how easy it is.
There has been confidence in Buatsi throughout his professional career that he will one day compete in the world championship class.
