Boxing Fight: According to Chris Eubank Jr., he did consider boxing Conor Benn next but ultimately decided against it despite the “millions and millions” that were on the table.
Benn was unable to face Eubank Jr. the previous year due to failing drug testing. They were supposed to fight in October at a catchweight, but the fight was cancelled after it became out Benn had tested positive for clomifene twice.
Instead, Eubank Jr. faced Liam Smith in January, a thrilling match that he lost in just four rounds.
Then, he used his clause for a second chance against Smith, but he also said that he had thought about taking on Conor Benn.
Conor Benn has now been officially charged by the UK Anti-Doping Agency for his failed drug tests, and his boxing career has been temporarily stopped.
However, Benn stated in a statement from last month that he felt “free to fight in events that are not sanctioned by the BBBoC (British Boxing Board of Control)”.
Eubank Jr. claimed to have received a sizable offer to face Benn and that he was under no obligation to accept the Smith rematch.
“Conor Benn was a contender for my next bout,” Eubank said to Sky Sports. “Because when someone offers you a fight for millions and millions and millions of pounds, you think about it. You don’t merely dim the lights.
“I was offered a substantial quantity of money to fight Conor Benn abroad, but I determined that the time and place weren’t right. The circumstances weren’t the best.
“Regardless matter how much money you throw at me, things have to be right.
“If I’m not feeling well right now and Conor isn’t feeling well either. To go on, I must make Smith pay for what he did.”
On July 1, Eubank Jr. will fight Smith at the AO Arena in Manchester.
He insists that the rematch with Smith is his only choice.
He replied, “There are still so many names out there for me to fight with. The beautiful part is that many of these fighters are domestic, and there are so many big names that the people want to see me fight. In the UK, they are. For UK fans, that is fantastic. There are several fantastic matches for world titles both domestically and internationally.”
“However, I must overcome Liam Smith. If I don’t take care of business, I won’t be able to battle these well-known opponents. I’m not even concentrating on any of it at the moment.
“It only needs to obtain the getback right now. It’s time to get even.”
