First Bout: Jared Anderson went the distance for the first fight, defeating former world champion Charles Martin in front of 7,234 local supporters in Ohio on Saturday evening.
The athleticism of the heavyweight helped him win several early rounds of the 10-round fight, as he consistently pushed Martin while drawing away to avoid any return shot. He turned to Southpaw in the third round and felled Martin with a counter right hook.
The 23-year-old knockout artist attempted to end the bout, but Martin survived. Anderson slowed slightly by the fifth round, allowing Martin to hit him with many left hands.
Anderson countered by reverting to his jab and increasing his output to the body, eventually outpointing Martin in the later rounds. With scores of 98-91 and 99-90 from two judges, he maintained his WBO International and WBC USA belts.
“It felt great,” Anderson remarked. “I was accompanied by my crew. I’m bringing my family. Toledo is with me. They arrived and are now inside the building. They stayed with me for the full ten rounds. I could hear them the whole time. I’m thankful for my adversary. He agreed to fight on short notice. He arrived and did an excellent job. I believe we put on a great performance for Toledo.
“I wanted to go the extra mile. It was my first experience. I just wanted to make sure I could go the distance and, more importantly, sustain power for the entire 10 rounds. He had power until the last round, and I was relieved to finish the rounds.
“I believe I took his best shots exceptionally well. I don’t recall ever seeming wobbly or unable to hold my own during the battle. Did it seem like he shocked me with a nice shot? No. But do I believe he caught me off guard and made me aware? Yes, so I had to recalibrate and get back on track.”
Martin stated that he done everything he could after agreeing to the fight less than two weeks ago.
