Joshua vs Whyte: In a late amendment to the contractual stipulations, Anthony Joshua’s management has included a one-way rematch option in his favour, complicating discussions for a heavyweight bout with Dillian Whyte.
Whyte restarted discussions this week after publicly challenging promoter Eddie Hearn after a breakdown in communication surrounding a highly awaited rematch, which is planned to take place at The O2 on August 12.
The Brixton resident has stated that he would accept the suggested battle against his British opponent and is open to a “winner-takes-all and moves on” match.
Joshua has previously been connected to a potential Deontay Wilder bout, which is expected to take place later this year in the Middle East.
If he beats Joshua, Whyte will strive for a similar fight in the future. As a result, the rematch provision might be a stumbling hurdle.
Whyte and Joshua have a long history of rivalry. He defeated AJ as an amateur before going on to win an Olympic gold medal in London in 2012.
They competed in a dramatic 2015 British heavyweight title fight, which Joshua won by seventh-round knockout.
Joshua eventually became the world’s undisputed champion. After losing two consecutive fights against Oleksandr Usyk, he bounced back with a victory over Jermaine Franklin in April.
Whyte rebuilt against Franklin after losing the WBC championship bout to Tyson Fury in Wembley Stadium in 2022.
“I’ve been up for fighting Joshua since the day I lost to him in 2015,” Whyte previously told Sky Sports.
“The score is now 1-1. He’s already won one. I beat him in the amateurs, then he beat me in the professionals, so I’m looking to settle the score.”
“I would love nothing more than to have a chance to avenge my defeat,” he continued.
“I’m just going to war. I want to go to war because I believe that’s the best way to battle him, to put pressure on him, to back him up, and to put him on the back foot as soon as possible, and I’m powerful enough and large enough to accomplish it.
“I obviously carry enough power to back him up and knock him out.”
