Live Boxing News: Josh Taylor calls Teofimo Lopez, his super-lightweight opponent, “a clown” and claims he would “tear him to bits” if they squared off in a bout the following year.
Although Taylor has been connected to a potential future fight with American Lopez, he is anticipated to defend his WBO super-lightweight title in a rematch against fellow Brit Jack Catterall in early 2023.
After losing his title to George Kambosos Jr. in November 2021, former lightweight world champion Lopez went up a level. He recently promised to knock out the previous undisputed champion Taylor in an interview with Sky Sports.
Though Lopez survived a knockdown to defeat Spaniard Sandor Martin by a razor-thin margin in New York over the weekend, his preparations for a blockbuster with Taylor were nearly disrupted.
Taylor told Sky Sports News, “He is a very good, very skilled fighter, but I do believe that on my night, I take him to bits.”
He has a clownish quality. He frequently appears to ignore his rivals. He has twice made the same error and nearly paid a price for it.
“His earlier remarks… He seems to have the same issue repeatedly, believes he is a gift from god, and then abruptly returns to Earth.
In 2020, Lopez made a name for himself by defeating Vasiliy Lomachenko, the lightweight world champion at the time. However, Taylor said he is not shocked that the American is having trouble now that he has stepped up in weight.
Taylor claimed, “I felt certain of defeating him anyway. “Don’t forget, he performed very well to defeat Lomachenko, but he also defeated a small, hurt lightweight who had the potential to move up to featherweight.
You have to give credit where credit is due, but he is no longer fighting blown-up featherweights.
Lopez had previously stated that he was willing to fight in the United Kingdom, but Taylor indicated he would also be happy to go after calling Lopez out once more after Taylor’s victory on Saturday night.
By defeating Jose Carlos Ramirez in Las Vegas in May 2021, Taylor, who has given up three of his titles to chase a rematch with Catterall, became the undisputed champion, but he believes the coronavirus outbreak curtailed his time in the US.
Taylor remarked, “I would like to go back Stateside, but it would be nice, it would be fantastic to have another big blockbuster night at home.”
“If it had been during normal times, I would have been able to bring thousands of people with me, including my friends, family, and supporters, to the largest fight I had to win the title of undisputed world champion. I’d like to return to the USA and do it again because I was unable to do so, which was very frustrating.”
