MSG Bill: Even though Xander Zayas, who is only 20 years old and has a perfect 15-fight professional record, wants to go down in boxing history when his career is through.
Next, Zayas of Puerto Rico competes on the undercard of Teofimo Lopez vs. Josh Taylor.
At Madison Square Garden in New York throughout the weekend of the Puerto Rican Day Parade, it will be a memorable occasion for him.
“We are really motivated and have the willpower to go there and perform for them because of the love and support we receive from our fan base,” Zayas told Sky Sports.
“When it’s time to fight, you fight like a warrior, and when it’s time to box and outperform someone, you simply go out and seem smarter, better than them, and don’t let them touch you, is how they educate us from the start in Puerto Rico.
“I feel like I will be able to demonstrate why I’m one of the best boxers coming up, why I’m going to be one of the best boxers at 154 pounds, and why I’m going to be one of the best boxers in boxing overall in the future.”
The young fighter has an extra incentive because the victor of Zayas’ match against Ronald Cruz will receive the second annual Miguel Cotto Award.
“The fact that I’m competing for this honour simply makes it that much more special. I’m eager to win, bring those crowns home, and get the new trophy,” he added.
“His all-time favourite combatant is Cotto. Both inside and outside the ring, Zayas stated, “I look up to him.”
“He’s a gentleman at the end of the day by the way he conducts himself both inside and outside the ring. And he is able to make those modifications because he can adapt to any fighter at any moment, in any round.
“Even when he lost, he was able to give out classic fights, he was able to give out a war.”
Zayas aspires to someday take Cotto’s path.
