Usyk-Fury Fight: The pursuit of staging Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Uysk’s undisputed heavyweight title battle later this year may resume.
Usyk’s team is presently working to book his next bout against Daniel Dubois, a fellow Brit.
For the WBA heavyweight championship, one of Usyk’s three major titles, Dubois is the required opponent.
Promoter Alex Krassyuk of the Ukrainian said to Sky Sports: “We are now focused on Dubois as the next step.”
Krassyuk, however, responded to rumours that Bob Arum, the co-promoter of WBC heavyweight champion Fury, was in discussions to hold the heavyweight title match in Saudi Arabia, saying: “He is alleging that he had negotiations with Saudi people on Fury vs. Usyk. Not us.”
Krassyuk did not, however, completely rule out the idea of a rematch, saying: “Everything else is possible after Usyk wins.”
Usyk won the WBA, WBO, and IBF championships in London in 2021 by defeating Anthony Joshua. The heavyweight champion returned to the sport to defeat Joshua in a high-profile rematch last year after serving on the front lines in Ukraine during Russia’s invasion of that nation.
It would require a battle between the two to determine who the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world is, though, as Fury, who is undefeated and now has the WBC title after defeating Dillian Whyte and Derek Chisora in two stadium bouts last year.
Deep discussions between Fury and Usyk’s camps were taking place to make that fight earlier this year, but those conversations ended publically with one side blaming the other.
Usyk was forced to hunt for a different challenger for his subsequent fight.
The next opponent for Usyk will likely be London’s Dubois, who won a thrilling fight against Kevin Lerena on the undercard of Fury’s most recent match.
Dubois owns a “regular” WBA title, which makes him Usyk’s required challenger while being a subsidiary belt to the complete world championship. There is currently no set date or location for Usyk vs. Dubois, and those conversations are still in progress.
