Boxing Live: Promoter Ben Shalom believes that the Frazer Clarke vs. Fabio Wardley match can yet happen.
The bronze medalist in the super heavyweight division at the Olympics, Clarke, may go up to British champion Fabio Wardley later this year. Ben Shalom, the promoter for BOXXER, says that Clarke needs to engage in a 10-round fight first.
In order for the title fight to take place on that schedule, Clarke’s management withdrew from the purse bidding for the Wardley fight.
“He has already competed in [planned] six-round fights, which is why we withdrew him out of the offer. His previous battle lasted two rounds. We won’t just throw him in. You would have to be taking a 12-rounder perhaps in three weeks without any practice,” according to Shalom, who spoke to Sky Sports.
“He would defeat Fabio Wardley in his first bout, so it’s not like he won’t. However, he won’t be competing in a 12-round bout in three weeks. That is the reason behind our offer. He will do a 10-rounder first, and we have sent an invitation to Fabio to accept the fight [that follows].
“It’s preferable for him to compete in a 10-round bout before his first 12-round battle. Regardless of the opponent’s calibre, everyone who has ever donned a pair of gloves or trained a boxer will tell you that you don’t suddenly advance from a six to a twelve-round bout.”
Despite the failure of the purse bids, discussions with Wardley’s team are still ongoing.
Another statement made by Shalom was, “One of the offers is a one-fight deal, no [further] obligation whatsoever.”
The battle might be staged later in the year, giving organisers more time to make it an even larger spectacle.
“This bout is significant for British boxing. Any promoter can cooperate with us; we’re pleased to. When engaging with Fabio Wardley’s staff, they never once requested that we meet with Matchroom, with whom we would have been pleased to communicate,” Shalom said.
