Boxing Live: Frazer Clarke has encouraged British heavyweight champion Fabio Wardley to challenge him.
Clarke had been compelled to face Wardley after only six professional fights. Clarke, however, withdrew from the purse bidding for the British championship bout on the advise of his management in order to obtain more professional experience first.
He required rounds after five stoppage victories and one six-rounder. Wach handed him that on Friday night at York Hall in London, when they boxed.
Clarke went the distance in his debut 10-round fight against the seasoned Polish heavyweight. The Olympic bronze medalist got off to a good start, putting up clever combinations and outworking Wach. The veteran hand, though, drew Clarke into clinches and leaned down on him with his 290lb size.
Clarke’s speed dropped in the latter portion of the bout for a round or two. It got feisty, and Wach threw in a couple good chunks of his own. Clarke, on the other hand, made sure to finish strong, landing hard right crosses and a crisp left hook in the last minutes to seal the victory.
He eventually got the work he required and won every round, defeating Wach 100-90.
He sent a message to Wardley.
“Come on, fight with me, let’s do it!” Clarke stated. “I believe it’s one of those fights where there’s a lot of interest. People will claim he can flatten me now even more than they have in the past. There is only one way for us to show it, and that is for us to compete.”
Clarke has faced harsh criticism, particularly from Wardley, for opting to take this step-up before launching into a championship race. Although Wach is known for his tenacity – few opponents have stopped him, and none have done so in the opening half of a fight – Clarke is ready himself for increased scrutiny.
“I’ll be the public enemy number one again,” he declared. “But I’m a good man; I live right, I do the right thing by God, and I do the right thing by my family. Please pass judgement on that.
“It’s been a media storm in recent weeks, but I’m going to pat myself on the back for getting in there tonight and dealing with it because I know a lot of people who would have crumbled.”
