Boxing News: After their planned fight for the British heavyweight title fell through, Frazer Clarke is still aiming for a home confrontation with Fabio Wardley.
Last week, the camp of the Olympic bronze medalist withdrew from purse bidding for the matchup with unbeaten British champion Wardley because they preferred that Clarke compete for 10 rounds first before a 12-round championship bout.
The 31-year-old is certain that a later date can be set for the bout, but he is convinced that he still wants to take on Wardley.
It has been an awful week, Clarke said to Sky Sports News. “A lot has been said about me, not always in the greatest way.”
“Everything’s just sad how everything went down. I was sort of painted as wanting to avoid the battle, but I know—even Fabio knows—that’s not how I roll.
“I’m not the type of person who shies away from conflict; I would relish that conflict. I believe it would benefit myself, Fabio, and the general public.
“Now I’ve got to focus on what comes next, and hopefully the people behind the scenes are cooperating to make that fight happen because I think it’s become a fight that must happen now.”
In November of last year, Wardley defeated Nathan Gorman in the third round to win the vacant British heavyweight title. At the beginning of April, he stopped Michael Coffie in the fourth round to improve his career record to 16-0 (15).
Following a stoppage victory over Bogan Dinu in the second round in March, Clarke is focusing his immediate attention to his upcoming fight out of respect for his domestic competitor.
Clarke declared, “I think it would be a great fight. He’s a great fighter. I was anxious to have that fight, perhaps a little too eager, but last week it all came to an end.”
“I’ve coped with what has been thrown at me; it is what it is. Now let’s focus on the next step and continue on.”
