Taylor vs Catterall Rematch: Josh Taylor is excited about the chance to face Jack Catterall once more.
Prior to their heated first altercation, Taylor acknowledged being “complacent.” He does, though, promise not to repeat “the same error.”
Taylor successfully defended his undisputed super-lightweight title against Catterall in February by winning a hotly contested split decision.
This year, the two will square off once more to make amends.
Taylor said to Sky Sports News, “I’ve been waiting on this for a long time. I’ve had to give go of titles, I’ve had to let go of all my championships pretty close to, I’ve got the WBO left, just to make this fight happen and establish that I’m a legitimate champion.”
Since the first bout, he has switched trainers, working with Joe McNally, and he intends to approach the second Catterall battle with a different mindset.
“I simply wanted to switch things up in terms of how I approached things,” Taylor claimed.
“I simply felt that in my prior camp, I was being dragged away from what my natural qualities are and that my style was being changed somewhat excessively. I must return to my authentic self.
“I think what I had accomplished in 18 fights and in only four or five years as a professional, being the first undisputed champion in the UK in the four-belt era, establishing a major part of history, I just became a little bit complacent,” he said.
“I tried to learn from previous athletes and boxers who allowed complacency to set in, but in the end, I am only human, and it did set in a little bit, but I won’t be making the same mistake twice.”
Catterall insists that he should have won the points decision and promises that it will happen in their next meeting.
He told Sky Sports News, “For me, it’s about solidifying my name alongside the elite fighters in my weight division and hopefully this time getting a fair shake.”
“Josh talked a lot about how he was going to outfight me, outpunch me, and outbox me before the first fight, but I had every response for him that night.
“I still think I can defeat him and have the answers they need.”
