Title Match: Josh Taylor anticipated competing against Teofimo Lopez when he came to the United States to advertise his next bout.
Shakur Stevenson’s triumph over Shuichiro Yoshino was witnessed by Taylor at the Prudential Center in Newark on Saturday.
On the live broadcast, he said that on June 10 at New York’s Madison Square Garden Theater, he would challenge Brooklyn’s Teofimo Lopez for the WBO super-lightweight title.
Although Lopez actually appeared through a video link, Taylor from Scotland had hoped to face his opponent in person.
The champion sees that as a win for him in the first battle of mind games leading up to the fight.
Taylor told Sky Sports, “I came over here to say hello to him and he’s gone hiding.”
“I flew over from halfway across the world to meet him and really pull him up. What time are you going to say, by the way? He’s not here, though. He hasn’t arrived. He is lacking a posterior.
“He can’t remain hidden for very long. There are still eight to nine weeks till the press conference, so I’ll simply have to wait until then.”
He interprets that as another piece of evidence, Lopez is not as assured as he initially appears to be.
Taylor remarked, “You see the fragility of him on video in his last two fights. A little amount of swagger, a sort of façade.”
“So it’s clear he’s a little weak mentally and a little frail. So I can definitely take advantage of that.”
The undisputed lightweight world champion was Lopez. Yet after his most recent match against Sandor Martin at super-lightweight, he did seem to doubt himself.
“He might be questioning his abilities, thinking he isn’t as good or as large and strong as he thought he was. He puts a lot of strain on himself by babbling rubbish, along with his father,” Taylor recommended.
“He’s putting a lot of strain on himself. Thus, I believe that he may have become a little upset recently.
“I do believe he might be mentally a little flimsy at times. Indeed I do.”
