French Boxing: Tony Yoka was brutally beaten by Carlos Takam over the course of 10 rounds on Saturday at Zenith de Paris, suffering a devastating loss.
Takam’s victory was decided only by a split vote, which was far closer than the score indicated by the fight’s action.
Yet the Frenchman’s career took a serious hit with this defeat, his second in a row.
Yoka, who won the gold medal in the super heavyweight division at the 2016 Olympics, was the biggest name in French boxing. His ability to gather crowds was demonstrated by his ability to sell out the 7,000-seat Zenith de Paris.
But Yoka was trying to restart his career following a humiliating defeat to Martin Bakole in his most recent battle.
Despite being 42 years old, Takam has experience competing against top-tier heavyweights. From Joe Joyce and Anthony Joshua to Derek Chisora and Joseph Parker, he has faced them all.
Takam was never discouraged, even after Yoka’s initial test results were favourable. He pushed forward, pushing Yoka aside and seizing control of the ring’s centre.
Yoka drilled a right and pounded his body with jabs.
However, Frenchman Takam, who was born in Cameroon, fought aggressively the entire time and used a double right hook to test Yoka’s trunk.
Yoka was knocked out with a strong right to the head and had to flee. Takam accepted the offer and carried out the attack while chasing his foe.
He delivered a series of punches before capping the barrage with a right hook to the head.
He grabbed Yoka once more by sweeping the same punch over and applied more pressure on the star.
Takam was caught by Yoka with a left hook to the head and a shot to the body, displaying brief glimpses of crisp work.
He wasn’t striking hard enough, though, to keep the determined foe away from him.
He finished the fifth round with a cut from a head clash, which only made matters worse.
Yoka skillfully avoided a left hook and moved away. Takam, however, poured in a barrage of hooks. He once more hit Yoka with a right to the head, giving him a brutal sixth round.
But, Yoka found a solid cross in the following round and landed it with poison. He continued to fire single jabs at the body, this time in an effort to slow down his opponent.
But, Takam’s arching hook caused the Olympic gold medalist’s gumshield to fly out of his mouth.
Yoka’s jaw hung open and a worried expression could be seen on his face as Takam’s left hook jolted him as well.
In order to gain some breathing room and escape the assault, he had to move away. Yet another round was conceded, and Yoka seemed to be in serious difficulty as the match approached its conclusion.
