Heavyweight Clash: Carlos Takam is likely 42 years old, by which time the majority of boxers would have long since retired. But on Saturday in Paris, he startled Olympic gold medalist Tony Yoka, handing the French star a bruising second straight loss.
Takam wants more, though. In addition to calling out Martin Bakole, the heavyweight who previously defeated Yoka, he is calling for other significant fights.
Takam yelled in triumph, “The large lion in the forest is not going to quit his play for a little one. Martin Bakole, are you ready? Sky should arrange a such fight, in my opinion.
“Like Tony, Martin Bakole is like a little brother to me.”
After the fight, Takam was courteous. He had charmed the audience at Zenith de Paris with his performance, but he took offence to his new fans booing Yoka right away.
“It didn’t make me happy. Really, he won a gold medal at the Olympics. He was an amateur world champion. That cannot be said. Everyone is in support of [Anthony] Joshua when he fights, as you can see. They yell, ‘Go, AJ.’ I’m a major fan of that person, and he needs help. I’m a huge Tony admirer,” Takam admitted to Sky Sports. “Because I’ve watched him mature.
“All I want to do is congratulate Tony. Some individuals will opine, ‘Yeah, he lost; he’s done.’ He hasn’t finished, though.”
Yoka himself was quite appreciative of the comment. “I feel more assured about my reputation as a result, and the only thing I need to do now is to get back to work,” he said in an interview with Sky Sports.
“Tough fight, I’m really sad because this time I had pretty fantastic training compared to the previous year when I had a really bad camp.
“He had plenty of time to prepare thoroughly for this one. He performed a technically flawless bout. I must return to my job as a result.”
Takam was worried about the split decision, though, as he had seemed to be in control of the fight.
“Naturally, I was concerned because I had injured my shoulder in the previous round. I was unable to manoeuvre [his right arm]. It’s finished, I thought ” he said. “What am I going to do, oh my God? But, I made an effort and practised my left hook and jab. I made every effort to prevail in that conflict.
“I’m in good spirits. I worked really hard to get ready for that bout. I want to stress that I worked extremely hard at that camp,” He went on. “Tony, you have my respect.
“It was not an easy victory, so I’m very thrilled about it.”
