Undisputed Title Matchup: In her fight with Chantelle Cameron on Saturday, Katie Taylor will attempt to become an undisputed two-weight champion and has promised to keep proving the naysayers wrong.
Irish sensation Taylor moves up to super-lightweight to face unbeaten Cameron, who won a unanimous decision over Jessica McCaskill in November of last year to become the uncontested champion.
Despite amassing a 22-0 (6) record since becoming pro and beating Amanda Serrano in their undisputed lightweight title match by split decision in New York last April, the 36-year-old is aware that some people will be writing her off before the bout in Dublin. She accepts such reservations.
Taylor admitted that she enjoys “proving people wrong as well; I love when some people are betting against me. In the Amanda Serrano battle, it was the same.
“I love that I overcame and disproved those people, and I have the opportunity to do it again on fight night. She was considered the favourite in the bout by many.
“I’m definitely extremely, very motivated and pumped for this battle. I think I’m in excellent form, and I think this will be the best night of my career so far.”
Similar to Taylor, Cameron has successfully fought everyone she has faced since going pro in 2017. The Northampton fighter has amassed a 17-0 (8) record while ascending to the top of the super-lightweight class.
Taylor has had the 31-year-old on his radar as a prospective opponent for some time, and when Serrano withdrew from a potential rematch due to injury, the 2012 Olympic gold medalist quickly turned his attention to Cameron.
Taylor said, “I’ve had my eye on Chantelle for a few years now. This is a fight I’ve always wanted to have for myself, and switching from Chantelle Cameron to Amanda Serrano was a good move since my passion for the fight is as strong as ever.
“I believe that switching from an Amanda Serrano battle to a required opponent, one that I couldn’t really get up for, would have been far worse. She and I are both sincerely determined to win this battle.
“There is a great thirst for this fight, so I know I’ll have to give it my all on fight night. People are already comparing it to the Amanda Serrano fight and claiming it will be even better. I’m really thrilled that this battle may happen and am enthused about it.”
