Usyk vs Fury: The cancellation of their undisputed heavyweight championship match has been attributed to Oleksandr Usyk by Tyson Fury.
The WBC champion Fury appeared to be on track to fight Usyk on April 29 and become the undisputed WBO, WBA, and IBF champion.
But, despite a protracted period of negotiation, the two parties could not reach a conclusion and talks finally collapsed on Wednesday.
Usyk was accused of “running” by Fury, who also claimed that Usyk had never been strong enough to challenge the “Gypsy King” in his entire life.
Usyk had agreed to Fury’s public challenge to take the short end of a 70/30 purse split under the condition that Fury contributes significantly to the relief efforts in Ukraine.
Fury said on social media on Thursday that Usyk “tried all week to get out of it, begging for a rematch.”
“You got your rematch, then you didn’t want to fight at that,” he went on. “You 14-year-old coward.”
According to Usyk’s promoter, Alex Krassyuk, the conversation about the rematch clause and purse split for a prospective second fight was the final straw for the unified champion.
Krassyuk told Sky Sports that the rematch clause was just the tipping point.
“Usyk had had enough of everything by the time the rematch split was discussed. ‘How many times do I have to lower my head in front of Tyson?’ he asked. What is the point of doing this? It’s sufficient. ‘Either he accepts what I say, or I leave’. Tyson refused to take it and departed.”
Krassyuk did say that a one-fight agreement may still be “usable,” but that “the split should not be 70/30.”
The match appears to be over, and the WBA is anticipated to direct Usyk to combat its mandatory challenger Daniel Dubois in the coming days.
“Continue running. Battle Dubois right now at the Copperbox,” Fury said. “And always remember that you or anyone else could never tangle with the ‘Gypsy King’.”
