BCCI: Former India cricketer Ajit Agarkar is expected to be the next Chief Selector, as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) plans to raise the head of the selection committee’s yearly compensation. According to previous reports, numerous prominent names in Indian cricket were unwilling to apply for the role owing to poor pay.
The role has been vacant since former Chair of Selectors Chetan Sharma resigned earlier this year as a result of his involvement in a contentious sting operation. Sharma was fired after making some surprising comments concerning Indian players and their choices that were exposed in the media.
Since then, former Indian cricketer Shiv Sundar Das of the East Zone has served as Interim Chair of the selection committee till a new chairman is appointed. According to an Indian Express story, Agarkar is expected to become the next chairman after the BCCI guaranteed him a rise in his yearly remuneration, which is now fixed at one crore rupees. Each year, the other members of the selection committee are paid Rs 90 lakh.
According to the source, Agarkar has applied for the position and is the front-runner for the position due to a dearth of major names among the candidates. The Maharashtra-born cricketer recently parted company with the Delhi Capitals, where he currently serves as an assistant coach, clearing the door for him to become the next head selector.
Notably, he had previously applied for the position in 2020 but was not chosen. Subroto Banerjee, Salil Ankola, Sridharan Sharath, and Shiv Sundar Das will join Agarkar.
An announcement might be made following the Apex Council Meeting.
According to rumours, some former cricketers, including Virender Sehwag, were hesitant to apply for the post since they might earn more money through ads and commentary duties. As a result, the BCCI agreed to raise the yearly compensation in order to attract a prominent figure from Indian cricket.
Agarkar has played 26 Tests, 191 ODIs, and four T20s for India, and was also a member of the team that won the T20 World Cup in 2007 under MS Dhoni’s captaincy. The selection of the Chairman of Selectors is likely to be announced during the Apex Council Meeting on July 7.
