T20 Cricket: Shubman Gill’s style of play, in the opinion of former Indian cricketer and analyst Aakash Chopra, is more suited to the lengthier formats of the game rather than the T20 Internationals. On January 3, when India and Sri Lanka faced off in the opening Twenty20 match of the three-match series at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, Gill made his T20I debut.
Maheesh Theekshana substituted the promising opener for 7 after he failed to significantly score on the crucial occasion. He and wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan opened India’s batting in the first innings, however, he was unable to make a substantial contribution to the game and was forced to return to the pavilion during the powerplay.
The Indian cricketer Gill, who has already played in 15 ODIs and 13 Test matches, had to wait a very long time to make his T20I debut. Chopra critiqued Shubman’s batting strategy for the shorter format and said the forthcoming matches would be crucial for him.
“I think Shubman Gill has to win these games badly. You may argue that since this is his debut, these are significant contests. They are significant because I’ll admit it, I think of Shubman Gill as a long-format player when I see him. T20 cricket is not the best format for him given the manner he currently plays,” Chopra declared on his YouTube channel prior to the second T20I.
He will need to disprove doubters like myself: Chopra
Gill has travelled with the Indian Test and ODI squads for the past few years. Many believe he will soon become the face of Indian cricket. He was only given a few opportunities, but he was still able to provide some meaningful innings to the Indian team. In addition, Chopra lauded Gill’s skill in longer forms, suggesting that he may one-day lead Team India in Tests and One-Day Internationals.
“I envision him playing Test cricket for India for a very long time, and he may even take over as captain. He will represent India in ODI cricket for many years. He may ultimately take over as captain there as well. Gill has only recently made his debut, therefore he must take use of his possibilities. He’ll have to disprove doubters like myself. I won’t speak to Ishan Kishan while he is hitting brilliantly. Suryakumar Yadav was exonerated once, but he won’t be exonerated again,” said Chopra.
