Border Gavaskar Trophy: In the lead-up to the forthcoming, critically crucial Border Gavaskar Trophy, which is set to be played beginning on February 9, 2023, former Australia batsman Ian Healy made a very uncommon statement about the Indian pitches. India has won both of the previous editions, which were both held in Australia.
The triumphs in both seasons were momentous; while the one in 2019 saw India win their first Test series on Australian soil, the one in 2021 was nothing short of a fairytale, beginning with the 36-all-out collapse in Adelaide and ending with the epic breaching of the Gabba stronghold.
A subtle jab at Indian pitches from Ian Healy
The 58-year-old stated on SENQ Breakfast that if they generate fair Indian pitches that are decent batting wickets, to begin with, (that) probably spin and spin relatively consistently but spin a long way, late in the match… we (Australia) win.
The ex-wicketkeeper-remarks batter contained some really strange digs at India. Healy’s remarks also followed the much-discussed Lucknow Ekana stadium pitch from India’s second T20I match against New Zealand, which was not only a very low-scoring thriller but was also dubbed a “shocker” by many cricketers, including Hardik Pandya.
“Concerning the first Test, I’m concerned about Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon. I believe India plays those circumstances better than us if the wickets are unfair like I have seen in the most recent series, where balls were leaping outrageously and falling down low from day one,” Healy stated.
Healy concluded by advising the less seasoned Australian players to take the fielding teachings extremely seriously and to resist giving in to pressure, especially in light of the incredible international fielding standards India has recently set for cricket.
“I want the players to be extremely conscious if they are utilising the golf simulator in their room to hide from the pressure (from the locals)… I believe you need to take action. Just be extremely conscious of how you are feeling at any given time. That is an escape, you shouldn’t be doing it, and you are dodging. Before you actually use your approach, immerse yourself. Do not lose catches; fielding can be challenging there,” he said.
