Cricket Live: Suresh Raina, a former Indian cricketer, shared a really amusing event involving Yuvraj Singh and Sachin Tendulkar during his debut in 2005. Notably, the Southpaw made his India debut on July 30, 2005, against Sri Lanka in an ODI.
Raina claimed on his debut that he received the national cap from former captain Rahul Dravid. However, he also noted how former teammate Yuvraj Singh made a humorous remark about Raina when he claimed that he idolised Dravid.
“Rahul (Dravid) Bhai gave me my India cap in 2005. I had to deliver a speech in front of Paaji (Sachin Tendulkar), Viru Paa (Virender Sehwag), Dada (Sourav Ganguly), VVS Laxman, Zaheer (Khan) Bhai, Ashu (Ashish Nehra) Bhai, Anil (Kumble) Bhai, Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh) Paa, Bhajju (Harbhajan Singh) Paa, MS Dhoni had newly joined the squad and Irfan Pathan. So I began my customary spiel, but was interrupted midway and asked to pick my favourite player,” Raina said, as published by Hindustan Times.
“I said I idolise Rahul, sir, a lot, so Yuvi grabbed my leg and said, ‘The world’s best batsman and God of Cricket is sitting here, how is he not your favourite?'” I emphasised that Sachin Paaji was also a favourite, but I had Dravid pictures on my wall. “It was a very friendly banter that broke the ice for me,” he said.
In September 2022, the former India and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) hitter declared his retirement from all forms of cricket. Raina played in 226 ODIs, 78 T20Is, and 18 Tests for the national side, scoring 5615, 1605, and 768 runs in those formats, respectively.
The player was released by Chennai Super Kings ahead to the 2022 player auction and could not find a franchise to play for in the tournament. The southpaw just started his commentary career, as he was a member of the pundits’ panel at the just-ended IPL 2023.
