Cricket News: After criticising the Australian players for not directly confronting him during his coaching tenure, former Australian head coach Justin Langer stirred up some media attention. The former Australian opener has since changed his mind and apologised for his comments, saying he is friends with the Australian players and doesn’t have anything against them.
This week, Langer made headlines for calling some Australian players cowards in an apparent jab at current Test and ODI captain Pat Cummins. The former Australian cricketer felt betrayed by the players’ decision to voice their criticism of his coaching methods in the media rather than in person.
Nick Hockley, chief executive of Cricket Australia, who backed the Australian players and stated that Langer had received formal and informed feedback regarding his strict coaching methods, took issue with his remarks. After revealing his cordial relationship with the Australian players in a recent statement, the 52-year-old has effectively put an end to the rumoured rift with Cummins.
Some of this is pure and simple nonsense. I have the utmost regard for Patty Cummins; he is a fantastic athlete and a wonderful person, so any notion that there is hostility (between) us is untrue. You can hear me thank Pat, Finchy, and Tim Paine for providing the input if you listen to the episode. Ironically, I met with Patty on Monday, and we spent a lot of time discussing how the team, he, and his family are doing,” Langer remarked in an interview with Channel 7.
My four years as Australia’s coach were wonderful: Langer
The previous head coach led Australia to their first-ever T20 World Cup victory last year but left the post after the CA offered him a four-month deal. He disclosed that he had maintained contact with the players even after leaving earlier this year and that he had enjoyed every minute of his time as a coach.
“I received birthday texts from all the lads two days prior. Since I left the squad, I’ve maintained contact with all of these boys. It wasn’t the way I would have liked it to end, but that’s life, that’s the business, and it’s a tough business. I loved my four years as Australia’s coach; it was brilliant.
