LSG: Former Australia cricketer and head coach Justin Langer has been named the Lucknow Super Giants’ new head coach for the next season. Notably, the organisation said goodbye to the previous coach Andy Flower earlier in the day when his two-year contract expired. During Flower’s tenure, the Lucknow Super Giants performed admirably in both seasons of the IPL (2022 and 2023), reaching the playoffs in both editions.
Flower is now working as a consultant for Australia for the men’s Ashes. Langer, on the other hand, retired from coaching the Australian cricket team in 2022. The famous opener is now serving as a broadcaster for the ongoing Ashes 2023.
Meanwhile, with the newest news from the Lucknow Super Giants team, they turned to Twitter to announce Langer’s hiring in a brief message.
“‘JUST IN: LANGER,'” said the franchise on their Twitter.
A few minutes before the formal announcement, the franchise’s social media handle offered a hint for fans by sharing a collage of American actor and musician Justin Timberlake with people eating food at a ‘Langar’ (feast).
Notably, Langer resigned as Australia’s head coach after reportedly being handed an insulting six-month contract extension after leading the team to their first-ever T20 World Cup victory in 2021. There were also speculations of a rift between Langer and some of the team’s more experienced players.
Following his departure, Langer received backing from a number of former players, including Mark Waugh, Adam Gilchrist, Ricky Ponting, Steve Waugh, Matthew Hayden, and the late Shane Warne, who chastised Cricket Australia for his mistreatment.
Langer most recently led Australia to victory in the Ashes in 2022-23.
Following that, Justin Langer was replaced by Andrew McDonald, who was charged with leading the squad forward. So far, the Pat Cummins-led squad has done well, winning the World Test Championship final 2023 against India and leading the present Ashes 2023 series against England by 2-1.
