Cricket News: Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin remembered a comical event involving Rishabh Pant and batting coach Vikram Rathour that occurred on Day 3 of the just-finished second Test match between Bangladesh and Mirpur before stumps.
The veteran opener hit an unbeaten 42 runs to save the squad from certain disasters, helping the KL Rahul-led Indian team to a thrilling victory in the second and final Test. But at one point, India was staring at a humiliating loss, and Vikram had enquired of the batters whether they needed a night watchman.
Ashwin was visibly upset by Pant’s response after former captain Virat Kohli declined. The Indian wicketkeeper-batter is renowned for his comedic commentary behind the stumps, which frequently gets picked up by the stump microphone.
“Virat Kohli was asked by Vikram (Rathour) Paaji whether he needed a night watchman. Kohli asserted that he would take care of everything and didn’t require a night watchman. Rishabh Pant typically lays down on the table with the towel covering his head. On his YouTube channel, Ashwin stated,” I don’t know the precise reason for him doing that.
“Virat claimed he didn’t require a night watchman,’ Vikram Rathour inquired. Do you require it? I require watchmen all night long. Tomorrow, I’ll go and play (Pant replied). He stated it so nonchalantly that I couldn’t help but laugh.”
He was unfazed and made jokes when I was feeling quite anxious. Rathour Bhai said, “Jaydev Unadkat is the last one remaining.” Who else ought we send? Send Ash Bhai or anybody you like, Pant said. Tomorrow, I’ll take the field,” Ashwin continued.
As part of a three-match T20I series and an equal number of ODIs that will start on January 3 in 2023, India will face Sri Lanka in their next assignment. Both teams will strive to achieve favourable outcomes, particularly in the 50-over format given that the ODI World Cup will be played in India later in 2023.
