TNPL 2023: The fourth match of the Tamil Nadu Premier League 2023 between Dindigul Dragons and Ba11sy Trichy experienced the rarest of rare occurrences on the cricket ground, with both the batter and the bowler referring the decision on the same ball. The event happened in the first inning. Trichy’s R Rajkumar was ruled out by the on-field umpire on the fifth ball of the 13th over delivered by Dragons’ Ravichandran Ashwin when the players protested for caught behind.
The batter was dissatisfied with the ruling and promptly reviewed it. According to the replays, Rajkumar’s bat impacted the ground at the same time the ball was near to his bat. The Ultra-edge revealed a spike, but, the third-umpire discovered a clear space between the bat and the ball and consequently, reversed the ruling to be ‘not out’.
However, as soon as the on-field umpire reversed his judgement and signalled not out, Ashwin requested another review. The third umpire went through the same procedure again and found no edge, thus the decision was upheld.
Returning to the game, Trichy Captain Ganga Sridhar Raju won the toss and chose to bat first. They didn’t get off to the greatest of starts, as opener Jafar Jamal (4) was removed by Saravana Kumar in the opening over. The dismissal sparked a run of wickets for Trichy, who were reduced to 49/6 after 10.2 overs.
Captain Raju (48 off 41 balls) and R Rajkumar (39 off 22 balls) contributed 65 runs for the seventh wicket in just 40 balls to assist their team reach 100 runs. Trichy couldn’t get help from the tailenders when their partnership ended with Ashwin dismissing Raju in the 17th over.
As a consequence, the Dragons were bowled out for 120 in 19.1 overs, with Sarvana Kumar (2/17, 3 overs), Ashwin (2/26), and Subodh Bhati (2/8, 3.1 overs) each taking two wickets. In response, the Dragons suffered an early setback as opener Vimal Khumar was dismissed for a two-ball duck in the first over. However, his opening partner Shivam Singh hit a magnificent 46-ball 30 to keep his side in the chase. The Dragons eventually triumphed by six wickets.
