Cricket News: When discussing the finest players in cricket history, the name of former India captain MS Dhoni is constantly mentioned. The 41-year-old captain of the Indian squad won every major prize and even led the Chennai Super Kings to four IPL titles.
Dhoni made his IPL debut for CSK more than 15 years ago; since then, he has become one of the franchise’s top fan favourites and has completely revolutionised the wicketkeeper-batter and finisher role. With the 16th edition of the IPL just around the verge, renowned Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar praised Dhoni.
“I think it was absolutely incredible when CSK returned and won the IPL championship because the team had not been together for two years and they had moved out with different teams and suddenly they come back again,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.
“It demonstrates leadership. That explains how the man was able to reassemble a team after such a long time. Sometimes, you know, first year, second year, there is a team spirit that happens, but getting all of them together after such a long period is astounding,” He went on to say.
Sunil Gavaskar recalls a particular MSD masterclass.
Gavaskar went on to pour accolades on MSD in further detail. The renowned Indian batsman recounted a game in which CSK needed 20 runs to win and Dhoni’s blistering batting drove the team to an emphatic victory.
“I recall that year and some of the strokes that he played, I remember one game where the teams required 20 odd runs in the final over and he just banged it around from outside the off stump, he was hitting it over long on for sixes!” Gavaskar explained.
“We were used to seeing it from Dhoni, but even those tiny touches of his when he makes a fielder, a player feel 7 feet tall, are the touches that set him apart,” he continued.
