Former England Captain: Six of the seven people accused of uttering racial remarks at Yorkshire Cricket Club have had their allegations upheld by a Cricket Disciplinary Commission. Just the former England captain Michael Vaughan was exonerated of the charges.
After an inquiry by the England and Wales Cricket Board showed widespread use of racially insensitive language at Yorkshire over the previous two decades, the former England captain was one of seven individuals charged with racial abuse.
Azeem Rafiq, a former Yorkshire cricketer, claimed that Vaughan told a group of four British Asian and Asian players at a pre-match huddle before a Yorkshire match in 2009 that “there’s too many of you bunch.”
The CDC announced the decision on Friday, March 31, after hearing the case-related evidence earlier in March.
The CDC judgement made mentioned several discrepancies in the witness testimony given by Rafiq and Adil Rashid. Moreover, Rana Naveed ul Hasan’s statement, which had initially verified Rafiq’s assertions, was not recorded by the ECB. Although Rana claimed that Vaughan said “you lot” to ITV in a conversation in 2021, no testimony to that effect was heard at the trials.
The panel’s decision regarding the charge against Vaughan, which was largely supported by witness testimony from both sides, was as follows: “The Panel has been asked to focus on the focused evidence that both parties have provided with a single comment that was made in two parts on an afternoon that was nearly 14 years ago.”
“The Panel did not feel that it was necessary to draw the judgement that anyone had lied or acted maliciously in this case. Far from it, the Panel had to decide whether the information provided by the ECB was accurate and reliable enough to rule out error based on all the available evidence. It wasn’t,” the verdict stated further.
In a statement following the decision, Vaughan criticised the CDC procedure, calling it an “inappropriate, inadequate, and regressive step.”
“There are no winners in this process, and better ways are necessary for cricket to advance successfully and constructively, according to his remark.
“This procedure has occasionally put me in danger of losing my love for cricket. I won’t discuss how it has affected my family and me here, but I do not doubt that it has been extremely stressful for everyone else involved as well. I hope that now may begin an inclusive healing process for them and cricket,” the statement further read.
