Former India Coach: Between 2014 and 2021, R Sridhar served as the fielding coach for the Indian cricket team.
R Sridhar, a former fielding coach for team India, remembered a chat he had with seasoned spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and discussed how it inspired him to alter his coaching approach.
Between 2014 and 2021, Sridhar served as the fielding coach for the Indian cricket team. During that time, he had the opportunity to collaborate with a number of head coaches, including Duncan Fletcher, Anil Kumble, and Ravi Shastri.
Meanwhile, Ashwin made it clear to R Sridhar during his early tenure as fielding coach that the player would only listen to his suggestions if they ultimately improved his performance, according to Sridhar.
I have a lot on the line over the next three years: R Sridhar to Ashwin
“In my first week with the national team, I was struck by one of Ashwin and I’s early chats. He asked, “If you don’t mind, Sridhar sir, why should I listen to you and practise the fielding drills you recommend?” without being confrontational. Why should I comply with your request? According to an excerpt from R Sridhar’s autobiography,” read an excerpt from R Sridhar’s autobiography titled ‘Coaching Beyond – My Days with the Indian Cricket Team’.
“You will stay there for, say, two to three years now that you have arrived. You’ll say something and then leave. A new fielding coach will then arrive. If I’m being completely honest, I have a lot riding on the next three years. You ought to be able to persuade me that what you’re saying will help me. Why should I listen to you if it won’t improve my performance?” he continued.
“I was already very comfortable with his perspective because we were already acquainted. His questions made me ponder how much coaching I should be doing. What is coaching, exactly?” He went on to say.
