ODI Comeback: Glenn Maxwell, an Australian all-rounder who broke his leg at a friend’s party in November 2022, made a remarkable return to competitive cricket by scoring 50 runs in his first match back.
The white-ball specialist participated for his team Fitzroy-Doncaster in a Victorian Premier Cricket match over the weekend, making 61 runs off 92 balls while missing three months of cricket due to the injury.
After being down to 3/18 in their run pursuit of 215 runs against Kingston Hawthorn, the powerful hitter helped his side win by a thrilling two wickets.
According to News18, David Hussey, Cricket Victoria’s head of male cricket, said on Saturday that adding a player of Glenn’s calibre to the squad was exciting. “He has a wonderful record in Shield cricket, and it’s a shame he hasn’t been able to play more of it,” Hussey said.
Because of his recent resurgence, Maxwell is a candidate for the forthcoming three-match ODI series against India in March. According to cricket.com.au, Maxwell “could be considered for the upcoming 3 ODIs against India next month if he can show his fitness.”
Due to an injury, Maxwell was unable to participate in the current Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where Australia and India are playing a four-match Test series. He might soon return to international cricket, though, if he can maintain his form and fitness.
Still being evaluated is bowling fitness
In the Victorian Premier Cricket match, Maxwell’s return to the field was essential in helping his team secure a victory since his key knock served to steady the innings. Throughout his innings, he smacked two sixes and five boundaries.
The all-rounder did not bowl throughout the game, and his bowling readiness will still be evaluated before Monday’s Marsh Sheffield Shield encounter between Victoria and South Australia.
Fans and cricket enthusiasts alike have been anticipating the 34-year-return, old’s with many hoping to see the flashy all-rounder revert to his explosive best. The Australian side will be hoping that Maxwell’s strong batting form continues and that he can give the crucial firepower in the middle order with the ODI series against India just around the way.
