IND vs AUS: Ravichandran Ashwin led India’s spin assault in the fourth Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Ahmedabad, with figures of 6/91 with the ball against Australia in the first innings.
With Todd Murphy’s wicket, the off-spinner eclipsed Anil Kumble’s record of taking the most wickets for India against Australia in Tests while also taking a wicket in the match. Kumble retired from international cricket in November 2008 after participating in the first two Tests of the 2008–09 Border–Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. The legendary bowler finished his career against Australia with 111 wickets in 38 innings across 20 Test matches.
As of right now, Ashwin has surpassed Kumble to take the most wickets for India against Australia. The 36-year-old has 113 wickets so far in 41 innings across 22 Tests. Along with breaking this record, the renowned spinner also tied Nathan Lyon of Australia for the most Border-Gavaskar Trophy wickets taken.
In 47 innings in 26 Tests, Lyon has hunted 113 Indian batsmen to date (Border-Gavaskar Trophy). In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Lyon and Ashwin are both leading wicket-takers for their respective teams. Ashwin is leading the list of most wickets in the current Test series with 24 over seven innings and four games.
He had dismissed Alex Carey in the first innings of the first Test of the competition in Nagpur, becoming the second bowler for India to record 450 wickets in the longest format of the sport.
Sourav Ganguly, a former captain of India, praises Ashwin’s bowling performance.
Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly praised the elegant spinner after Ashwin’s brilliant bowling performance in the first innings. Ashwin removed the dangerous Cameron Green at 114 to aid India in their comeback on the Ahmedabad batting surface.
To end Australia’s innings at 480 runs, he also claimed the wickets of Todd Murphy, Mitchell Starc, Alex Carey, and Nathan Lyon. He also gave the squad a breakthrough earlier on Day 1 with Travis Head’s wicket.
“Great to see Ashwin bowl so well on a good pitch.. class will always show.. hopefully, this will be a good test match.. good opportunity for Indian batsman after some tuff wickets to bat on, in this series.. @bcci @ashwinravi99,” wrote Ganguly on Twitter after being impressed by the off spinner’s outstanding bowling display.
