India Captain MS Dhoni: MS Dhoni, the former captain of India, has petitioned the Madras High Court to summon and begin contempt proceedings against IPS officer G Sampath Kumar. Due to the IPS officer’s reported comments against the Supreme Court in a case involving match-fixing, Dhoni decided to make the move.
Given that the plea was not taken up for hearing on Friday, November 4, it is likely to be listed for hearing on Tuesday (November 8). It is a recent development in the case that dates back to 2014 when Sampath Kumar was barred from linking Mahendra Singh Dhoni to spot-fixing or match-fixing after Dhoni launched a legal lawsuit to stop him from doing so. Sampath Kumar was the police chief at the time, it should be emphasised.
Contempt proceedings are being started by MS Dhoni against IPS officer G Sampath Kumar
According to the legal lawsuit filed by the former India captain, he is suing Sampath Kumar and Zee Media Corporation for INR 100 CR in damages after they allegedly fixed a match against him.
The criminal contempt case will proceed as planned after receiving the go-ahead from R Shunmugasundram, the advocate general of Tamil Nadu. The criminal contempt case was scheduled for hearing on Friday, therefore the division bench of Justice PN Prakash was expected to handle it then.
On March 18, 2014, the court issued an interim order following the filing of Dhoni’s civil lawsuit. The temporary injunction prohibited the concerned officer (Sampath Kumar) from releasing any additional information regarding the then-India captain.
However, Sampath Kumar allegedly failed to recognise the ruling and submitted an affidavit to the Supreme Court that made disparaging words about the legal system and the top attorneys who were defending the State in the proceedings brought against him.
IPL 2023, which is expected to take place the following year, will feature Dhoni in action on the cricket field. During the IPL 2022 season, he assumed control of the Chennai Super Kings after Ravindra Jadeja resigned.
