Live Cricket News: A Pandora’s box has been opened as a result of Pakistan’s one-run loss to Zimbabwe in the T20 World Cup Super 12 round, and former players are now criticising the team everywhere they can. Since the Babar Azam-led team failed to chase down 130 runs against Zimbabwe, it will be very challenging for Pakistan to get to the semifinals. The team needs other outcomes to go their way in order to guarantee their spot in the tournament’s final four.
For more than a year, Pakistan’s middle order has drawn criticism, and there have been suggestions for either Mohammad Rizwan or Babar Azam to bat in the middle order instead of as the opener. Wasim Akram, a former captain, has now disclosed that when playing for Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), he once requested Babar to vacate his opening position.
“By the way, Babar and I experienced this together at Karachi Kings. We had a few unsuccessful seasons as a team, so I politely asked him to come down to number 3 so we could try something new,” Wasim Akram stated on The Pavillion, a sports programme.
“Given that Martin Guptill is an opener, let him bat first. And he (Babar) said that since Sharjeel is a natural opener, you should ask him to bat at position three. I refused to go down. The team also notices these minor things the leader does,” he added.
Akram continued by addressing the opening batsman: “These all start at the very top. And your captain is at the very top. if your skipper lacks confidence and only plays for himself. Babar must learn that if his captain scores runs while allowing other batters to bat in his place, you can tell that he is willing to give his life to save you.”
The T20 World Cup match between Pakistan and the Netherlands will follow on Sunday at Optus Stadium in Perth.
In the current competition, the Babar Azam-led team has lost to Zimbabwe and India, and they have yet to record a victory.
