Lord Test: The second Ashes 2023 Test did not go as well for England, who had lost the first Test by a razor-thin margin despite putting in a spirited attempt at Lord’s. Following a painful defeat in the first Test at Edgbaston, things did not improve for the hosts at Lord’s, as they failed to chase down a 371-run mark in the second innings, surrendering a 2-0 lead ahead of the third game at Headingley.
The performance of England’s skipper Ben Stokes was the biggest plus in the second Test. In order to chase down the goal, Stokes hit a stunning 155-run knock in 214 balls, giving his team a fighting chance. The English captain produced a superb inning, nearly repeating his exploits from the 2019 Headingley Test. However, it was all for naught in the end.
Stokes’ innings drew praise from fans and teammates alike, with former England captain Nasser Hussain stepping up to praise the England captain’s effort. Stokes, according to Hussain, is the most competitive English cricketer he has ever seen.
“I’ve never seen a more competitive England cricketer than Stokes, and it’s incredible how frequently he gets the ball out of the middle of the bat when all the fielders are on the rope.If he doesn’t clear them, he gets it in the gaps,” Daily Mail columnist Nasser Hussain wrote.
“For some, Australia’s boundary-protection strategy prevents them from scoring, but as we saw in Leeds four years ago, he is one of those cricketers – because he’s so powerful, and his placement is so good – for whom it makes no difference,” the statement read.
Furthermore, Hussain believes Stokes is one of the finest hitters in the world when it comes to chasing down targets, and he described several instances where Stokes demonstrated why he is one of the best batters in the world.
“On Sunday, Ben Stokes showed his England teammates what it’s all about — and there hasn’t been a better cricketer in my era in that kind of situation, whether it’s the World Cup final, World Twenty20 final, or Headingley four years ago, and it was remarkable on Sunday that he almost added another match-winning masterclass to his portfolio,” his column read.
