Asia Cup 2023: Najam Sethi, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), has counselled BCCI to make a reasoned conclusion about its stance on not visiting Pakistan for the Asia Cup in 2023. The continental tournament was awarded to Pakistan in 2022, however owing to India’s unwillingness to visit Pakistan because of political tensions between the two countries, the event may be shifted elsewhere.
In response to the situation, Sethi stated that the ODI World Cup 2023, which may be held in India starting on October 5, is more concerning to him than the Asia Cup. He said that if the two boards don’t immediately find common ground, the boycotting of the game would continue.
“BCCI should make a wise judgement so that there are no issues in the future. I’m not concerned about the Asia Cup; it’s the World Cup. India shouldn’t be considering a scenario in which we end up boycotting the Asia Cup, the World Cup, and then the Champions Trophy; that would be a major mess,” according to PCB chairman Najam Sethi, who was quoted by NDTV.
According to sources, Pakistan provided the ACC (Asian Cricket Council) with a hybrid concept in which India would have played its matches in the United Arab Emirates while the other teams played in Pakistan. Due to logistical problems, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and the BCB (Bangladesh Cricket Board) apparently didn’t like the plan.
How could you disregard our group and our nation? : Najam Sethi
Speaking further about the dispute, Sethi added that because Pakistan is placed higher than India in the ICC ODI rankings, the ICC should intervene to put an end to it.
“As a result, Pakistan is currently ranked first in the ODI rankings. The question then becomes, how can you disregard our team and our nation? So the ICC needs to intervene. But I get the impression that India would not want the ICC to intervene,” he continued.
It should be noted that India last visited Pakistan in 2008, the year the nation hosted the Asia Cup. Since their final bilateral series in India in 2012–2013, the two sides have only squared off in international competitions.
