Mental Health: Nat Sciver-Brunt, a talented all-rounder for England, has spoken candidly about her mental health hiatus and how consulting with a sports psychologist helped her gain perspective before making a comeback to professional cricket.
Notably, the 30-year-old made the decision to take a break from cricket in September 2022 as a result of England’s disappointing showing at the Commonwealth Games. England was optimistic about their chances of capturing gold at the but was unable to do so, placing fourth overall. Later, she declared herself to be “emotionally exhausted,” and therefore she withdrew from the series against India.
The cricketer stated she spoke to a clinical psychologist a few times while taking a much-needed mental health sabbatical.
“I felt like I needed the vacation after the six to twelve months before that. It did start to overwhelm me a little. I completed tasks that had been on my list for a year. Just being content at home and going about daily activities like mowing the grass and walking the dog,” Sciver-Brunt said as reported by Sky Sports.
“I tried to think on things, notably the Commonwealth Games, how they went, and how it affected me, which is probably the primary reason I needed to go home, and I spoke to a professional psychologist a couple of times about it. I haven’t talked to her since then, but I feel like I have gained some perspective and am better able to deal with situations as they arise rather than trying to recuperate from them,” she continued.
I guess the WPL came at a time when I was enjoying my cricket: Sciver-Brunt
One of the priciest acquisitions in the WPL auction was the England international, who went on to have a significant influence for the Mumbai Indians team. When discussing her experience with the WPL and her mental health at the time, Sciver-Brunt noted that this was precisely the moment she began to feel better.
“I suppose the WPL came at a time when I was extremely pleased and in a good position with my cricket and myself. I didn’t have to think about it for very long. Just focus on the cricket instead of thinking about it,” she said.
