ODI: Jasprit Bumrah’s skills were missed by Indian fans in the World Test Championship (WTC) final, which India lost by 209 runs to Australia. The speedster last played for India in September 2022 and had back surgery in March.
Bumrah is on the mend after a successful operation and is sweating it out at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. With just 100 days till the ODI World Cup, which will be contested entirely in India for the first time, Indian fans will be glad to learn that the fast bowler has begun bowling in the nets and is expected to play practice matches at the NCA next month, according to sources.
Several other sources indicate that the seasoned seamer is bowling seven overs in the nets and recovering well. After a few practice games at the NCA next month, his fitness will be evaluated.
He shouldn’t be rushed: Ramji Srinivasan
Former team India strength and conditioning coach Ramji Srinivasan believes Jasprit Bumrah should not be hurried back into the Indian lineup. In January, Bumrah tried a return against Sri Lanka in an ODI series. However, after allegedly bowling only three overs in the nets, the Gujarat bowler complained of back pain and was eventually dismissed from the squad.
“He shouldn’t be rushed. Playing practice matches at the NCA is a wonderful first step since it will help him adapt his body to match demands. However, before bringing him to top-level cricket, he should be forced to play in some actual (domestic) matches,” Srinivasan was cited as saying by Cricketnext.
“The demands of international cricket are different, and the body must be physically prepared to handle that level of workload. Recovering from a stress fracture is a delicate exercise, and Bumrah should be given as much time as possible,” he noted.
Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul are also being treated at the NCA for their ailments. According to rumours, both players are on the mend, but their long-awaited comeback cannot be projected at this time.
