Cricket News: To be ready for the ODI World Cup at home in October and November of this year, Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah underwent back surgery. On Monday, the procedure was carried out in New Zealand. Bumrah will remain in New Zealand until the end of March after the procedure. By August, the BCCI medical team hopes to have him back in the gym and bowling again. After that, his workload will gradually increase in an effort to have him match-ready for the World Cup.
Late in September of last year, Bumrah played his final domestic white-ball series against South Africa. Since that time, he has not appeared for India in any form of cricket. According to reports, a stress reaction in his lower back was the reason for his injury. He was scheduled to make his comeback at home in January versus Sri Lanka, but a backache prevented him from doing so.
According to sources, Bumrah’s ailment was being quickly treated by the BCCI’s medical personnel at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, who also suggested surgery as a potential treatment. After speaking with Bumrah about the subject, the BCCI and NCA decided to move forward with the surgery in New Zealand.
Bumrah’s repeated injuries are a problem for India
Bumrah has tried several times to make a comeback but has often fallen ill and is currently out due to the worrying back issue he suffered in August. He was disqualified from the Asia Cup as well, causing the team irreparable harm. On September 23 and 25, he faced Australia in his final two T20Is.
Bumrah was also unable to play in Thiruvananthapuram’s opening Twenty20 match against South Africa. Later, after the scan results were received, it was determined that the damage was caused by stress, and further scans at the NCA showed that the injury was of serious concern. He was consequently disqualified from the T20 World Cup as well.
After beginning his recovery in November, Bumrah started bowling in the middle of December. Bumrah was added to the Indian team for the white-ball series against Sri Lanka but later withdrew from the Australia Tests due to discomfort he had during a fitness test in Mumbai in early January. The NCA, Indian team management, and Rohit Sharma all want India not to rush Bumrah back into action until he is fully fit and able to perform at his best.
