ODI: In the Indian team for the three-match ODI series against the West Indies beginning July 22, only stand-in captain Shikhar Dhawan, Ravindra Jadeja, and Yuzvendra Chahal can be considered “seniors,” as the majority of others, including regular captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Hardik Pandya, have been rested. Jadeja is essentially a regular in all forms, unlike Dhawan, who is looking to secure his spot in the ODI XI with the upcoming World Cup at home in mind, as he had mentioned before travelling to England with the team. However, the all-rounder has been officially named as India’s vice-captain for any series for the first time.
It would be interesting to observe how Jadeja performs in the leadership role given that not so long ago he announced his intention to resign as captain of the Chennai Super Kings midway through the IPL 2022, claiming that the additional responsibility had negatively impacted his play.
There are just three choices for spin bowling in India’s bowling unit—Jadeja, Chahal, and Axar Patel. At least for the first two games of the series, India won’t likely consider giving Jadeja a break because Chahal will lead the spin assault and Hardik Pandya won’t be playing.
The Indian players worked out indoors at Queen’s Park in Port of Spain prior to the first game of the series while rain pelted sections of Trinidad. Jadeja was absent from the optional practise where players like Shikhar Dhawan, Shubman Gill, Deepak Hooda, Shreyas Iyer, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, and Arshdeep Singh honed their abilities under the direction of head coach Rahul Dravid, batting coach Vikram Rathour, and bowling coach Paras Mhambrey.
