VC in Tests: After a poor run in the format, Indian opener KL Rahul was demoted to vice-captain of the Indian Test team. In the last ten innings, the 30-year-old has failed to score a half-century. However, Team India has yet to name their new vice-captain, with speculations circulating that Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja are the frontrunners for the role.
According to speculations, India will likely name their new vice-captain before the start of the third Test against Australia on March 1. Former India wicketkeeper Saba Karim, on the other hand, believes that the reason India has yet to announce their new vice-captain is that they are waiting for Rishabh Pant’s return. Following his horrible vehicle accident in December of last year, the wicketkeeper-batter will not be seen on the cricket field for the remainder of the year.
“There is a reason India did not name a vice-captain. Everyone is looking forward to Rishabh Pant’s homecoming. He is an excellent choice for the position of vice-captain. He, too, was being groomed. “We also need to think about who would lead in the Next cycle, which begins in two years,” Karim was reported as saying by India News Sports.
Karim believes that Jadeja and Pant are the only legitimate candidates for the position. Though Pant has been out of the international system for the time being, Jadeja made a strong comeback during the Test series against Australia, winning Player of the Match in both games.
“Right now, there are just two candidates: Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja,” says the author. The problem with Jadeja is that he has a history of injuries. Pant, on the other hand, has not sustained any significant injuries. This was a sad accident, but aside from that, he has always been fit,” he noted.
This does not preclude him from making the starting XI: Saba Karim
The 55-year-old further remarked that despite being dismissed from the vice-captaincy, KL Rahul may still find himself in the playing eleven as India continues to win.
“The signal is very obvious that he (KL Rahul) has been demoted from the vice-captaincy because his performances have not been up to par. Nonetheless, this does not rule out the possibility of him making the starting Eleven. It’s only that you can only be vice-captain if you excel. The fact that India has been winning gives KL Rahul an advantage. Things would have been different if India had been down 2-0. “I would not have hesitated to remove Rahul from the team,” Karim concluded.
