SA20: During his commentary for the current SA20 tournament, former India cricketer Suresh Raina recounted a special incident involving Sachin Tendulkar when he (Raina) got a century back in 2014. In September 2022, Raina announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket, and he has since started a new career as a commentator.
Raina related a fairly unique occurrence involving Sachin that took place in 2014 after the southpaw got a century against England in an ODI in Cardiff while commentating on the ongoing SA20 league in South Africa.
“We worked on this for two weeks” (before the England tour in 2014). We weren’t doing so great in the Test series, and I had a tattoo that read, “Believe Yourself” when I was practising. I hit a century in Cardiff when I first arrived in England (in ODIs).”
Paaji was the first person to message me after the century, sending the message ‘Believe yourself.’ You can act on behalf of the nation. The Hindustan Times reported Raina as adding, “I felt really good after that message.
From 2008 until 2013, Raina and Tendulkar shared a dressing room. Additionally, the pair won the 2011 ODI World Cup together, and they continued to play together till the Master Blaster retired from cricket in 2013 after competing in his 200th Test in Mumbai.
However, Raina played for the Indian team through 2018 and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) of the Indian Premier League through 2021. The hitter, however, opted to reevaluate his place in the sport after being benched by the administration multiple times.
After the Chennai franchise disqualified him from the mega-auction in 2022, the batter announced the end of his professional career on social media. Along with some of the best players, like AB de Villiers, Kevin Pietersen, and Darren Sammy, Raina now leads the SA20 commentary panel.
