Charlotte Edwards Cup: The Southern Vipers successfully defended their title after defeating The Blaze in the Charlotte Edwards Cup final on Sunday, June 11. Following their successful title defence, Anya Shrubsole, a former English fast bowler and World Cup winner, declared her retirement from the game. Following her team’s triumph in the final, the seasoned cricketer was named Player of the Match.
Since making her debut for England in 2008, Anya Shrubsole has become a household name in the game. Despite playing only one game in the 2009 World Cup, she quickly rose through the ranks of the white-ball squad. Shrubsole, known for her ability to swing the ball quickly, led the bowling assault with Katherine Brunt for the bulk of her career.
She retired from international cricket last year but continued to play domestically. However, following the Charlotte Edwards Cup victory by the Southern Vipers, the 31-year-old opted to end her professional career. While she confessed that she enjoyed every second of the competition, her body was no longer able to handle the discomfort, which affected her choice to withdraw from the game.
“To be honest, it’s difficult to pinpoint when I made the choice. I guess it became evident to me throughout the course of this competition that my time was up. “I kept playing because I really enjoy it, but I guess the pain element of it – if I’m being completely honest – made it not particularly enjoyable at times, so it was a pretty easy decision to call it a day at the end of this year,” Shrubsole said after her team’s triumph.
I believe our experience played a role in the outcome: Shrubsole
The experienced pacer from Somerset also praised her colleagues after they won back-to-back titles to round off a fantastic goodbye for her. Shrubsole was selected Player of the Match for her excellent opening stint, which resulted in both of the Blaze’s powerplay goals.
“I consider myself extremely fortunate to have spent the last few seasons with this group because they are an exceptional team and a remarkable group of people.” I believe our experience influenced the outcome. We were in a pretty great position before it completely blew up yesterday, having got them to 50 for 4, and it’s always difficult to come back as a batting team and start again,” she continued.
